The BSA offers Merit Badges and Award programs to allow the Scout to develop personal skills. Merit Badges provide inspiration to explore new areas of interest which could lead to life time hobbies or insights to future career directions. Award programs encourage personal growth in areas of interest including: Sciences, Religion and Conservation.


Merit Badges


Merit Badge Summary.

Currently there are 136 Merit Badges which encourage the Scout to explore various areas of interest. The ranks of First Class, Star, Life Scout and Eagle have mandatory badge requirements. Presently to achieve Eagle Scout there are 21 badge requirements 13 of which are pre-selected and the other 8 chosen by the Scout.


Merit Badge Process



To earn a Merit Badge the scout needs to:

  1.  Identify the badge of interest and discuss this with 435 Scoutmaster
  2. The Scoutmaster signs a blue card and will assist the Scout to identify a counselor contact, if needed.
  3. Scout contacts the counselor and they discuss requirements and timetable.
  4. Scout needs to get a pamphlet on the Merit Badge subject. Pamphlets are available for purchase from the Scout Center, available for checkout from the Marathon Public Library, or, if available, from the Troop 435 library.
  5. Scout downloads the appropriate worksheet. Worksheets are available to download.
  6. Complete the requirements with the guidance of your counselor then upon completion the counselor will sign the blue card.
  7. Scout returns the blue card to the Advancement Chair
  8. Advancement Chair signs the blue card, records it and reports it to the Council
  9. Scout receives the Badge at the Court of Honor.
